Comedian Suzi Ruffell joins Routes from LNER
"It's Clown Town on the Train": Suzi Ruffell on Comedy, Motherhood and Life on the Rails
Award-winning comedian, Sunday Times bestselling author and podcaster Suzi Ruffell joins Jenni Falconer on the latest episode of Routes to share how train travel has shaped her life, career and comedy
From childhood caravan holidays to writing her bestselling book on trains, Ruffell reveals why she's always been drawn to travel, and how it's become inseparable from her work as a touring stand-up comedian.
In a warm and funny conversation, she opens up about the chaos of travelling to Edinburgh Festival ("It's clown town on the train," she laughs, recalling journeys with fellow comics Nish Kumar and Ed Gamble), her decidedly rock-and-roll backstage rider of tea and a banana, and what it's really like balancing motherhood with life on the road.
Ruffell also shares touching stories about travelling with her five-year-old daughter, who's more interested in cottage cupboards and sound-check lighting than the actual comedy. How her daughter's unwavering belief that mum is "brave, clever and unstoppable" inspired her new tour, The Juggle, launching 7 February.
Whether she's reminiscing about double-decker trains, long-haul trips to Australia, or travelling to the Women's EUROs in Switzerland, Ruffell's love of the journey shines through.
