Darlington’s railway heritage and future came together today (Friday 15 May 2026), as guests gathered to celebrate the culmination of the town’s multi-million pound station transformation. 

New research from LNER has revealed some of the UK’s best beaches to visit by train this summer, spotlighting coastal escapes that can be reached via LNER services and simple onward connections.

LNER employs dozens of brilliant, hard-working and dedicated travel consultants along its East Coast route between Edinburgh and London, but few can lay claim to a role quite as distinctive as Paul Doughty’s. Alongside his part-time role at the travel centre at York Railway Station, Paul also serves as the current Sheriff of York, one of the city’s most historic and ceremonial public offices.
