Families can save money on trips to London, Edinburgh and dozens of destinations in the North of England with new ticket

Families who travel by train for a fun day out this summer will be able to save money with a new ticket.

The Family Ticket allows people to travel between London and Edinburgh on LNER trains and on Northern services to one of 60 different destinations in the North of England. Families can step off an LNER train at Leeds and onto a Northern service heading to the likes of Kirkstall Forge or Knaresborough, or get off at Newcastle to travel onto Haltwhistle, Hexham or Seaham.

The new ticket, for up to two adults and four children (aged 15 and under), can save families 77 per cent on average and comes with reserved seats on LNER services for the whole party.

The two train operators have come together to launch this new ticket, as they work with the Department for Transport to make train travel simpler and more convenient. It comes as the Government is working to establish Great British Railways, to deliver better services for passengers across the country and better value for taxpayers.

The Family Ticket is now on sale but must be booked at least three days in advance.

Alex Hornby, Commercial and Customer Director at Northern, said: “We’re excited to be launching this new ticket ahead of the summer holidays as it makes train travel more flexible and affordable for families. This is yet another example of joining up the railway for the benefit of our customers and it opens up dozens of fantastic destinations in the North to families looking to enjoy a fun day out together.”

David Flesher, Commercial Director at LNER, said: “We’re always looking at how we can make journeys easier and more affordable for our customers. By teaming up with our friends at Northern on this new Family Ticket, we’re giving families more flexibility, more destinations and great value travel at a time when it matters most.

"Following the launch of the East Coast Main Line’s transformational timetable, this is the first summer LNER and Northern customers can enjoy even more choice of services. The Family Ticket is the perfect finishing touch, making it easier than ever to take a seaside escape, a city break or a countryside adventure.”

Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,650 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.

LNER calls at more than 50 stations along almost a thousand miles on the East Coast route, including major towns and cities between London, the East Midlands, Yorkshire, the North East of England and Scotland.
