LNER reveals the best destinations for outdoor adventures this spring

New research from LNER reveals that Dundee, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Lincoln are among the most inspiring destinations for a spring day out by train.

After a long, dark winter, many people feel the same pull to get outside and breathe in the fresh air. As the days grow longer, spring is the perfect time to explore the UK’s beautiful natural landscapes and make the most of the great outdoors.

The research analysed the 88 most populated towns and cities in the UK across a range of factors, including weather, landscape and outdoor activities, to uncover the best settings to embrace the season. Using data from trusted sources, including the Office for National Statistics, the Met Office, Google Keyword Planner and AllTrails, each city was weighted and scored to create a final ranking of the UK’s most inspiring destinations for a spring day out.

Several cities along the LNER route feature prominently in the top ten. Standing out in particular is Dundee, often recognised as Scotland’s sunniest city. In spring, visitors can enjoy colourful displays at the University of Dundee Botanic Garden overlooking the River Tay, or explore the open green spaces and woodland trails of Camperdown Country Park.

Aberdeen also features in the top five, thanks to its dramatic coastline and green spaces. Visitors can wander through Cruickshank Botanic Garden in Old Aberdeen or head south to Greyhope Bay, one of the UK’s best land-based locations for spotting bottlenose dolphins.

Edinburgh is among the top destinations, offering easy access to green spaces and panoramic viewpoints. In spring, areas such as The Meadows are known for their cherry blossom displays, while Arthur’s Seat remains a popular walking spot for views across the city. With more best-value Advance fares on offer, starting from £41.40 each way, and faster journey times between London and Edinburgh, it’s easier than ever to plan a spring escape to the Scottish capital by train.

Ranking sixth, Lincoln stands out for its mix of historic surroundings and accessible outdoor spaces. Lincoln Arboretum provides a central spot for a spring visit, while nearby Hartsholme Country Park offers lakeside paths and open green space just outside the city centre.

David Flesher, Commercial Director at LNER, said: “The UK is home to an incredible variety of landscapes and outdoor spaces, many of which truly come to life in spring. Travelling by train is a great way of getting there.”

“After the darker winter months, getting outside and exploring somewhere new can have a powerful effect on how people feel.”

“Through this research, we wanted to shine a light on some of the remarkable destinations that make it easier for people to step away from their routines, discover somewhere new, and make the most of the longer, brighter days. We’re delighted that so many places are on the LNER route.”
