Newcastle–London Demand Up Nearly 30% Following LNER Timetable Boost
LNER has revealed a 28.8 per cent* increase in train journeys between Newcastle and London King’s Cross following the launch of an extra hourly service between the two cities.
Introduced in December 2025, the new services form part of a transformational new LNER timetable, delivering more frequent services, increased capacity on the most popular parts of the route, and more options for many customers.
Across the route more than 3.7million journeys have been made in the first two months following the introduction of the biggest timetable changes on the East Coast Main Line in more than a decade.
With nearly 10,000 additional services per year and more than 60,000 extra seats every week across LNER, customers are feeling the benefits of greater choice and better value, with fares between London and Newcastle starting from £34.90 each way.
Colette Casey, Customer Experience Director at LNER, said: “Seeing millions of people choosing to travel with LNER and take advantage of more frequent trains, more seats, faster journeys, and even better value fares is incredibly encouraging. We’re delighted to see our services are proving particularly popular in the North East.
“Our new timetable is the result of extensive work across the industry. We’re committed to continuing to make rail the best option for journeys along the East Coast. As we head towards the Easter and summer periods, we have some really great prices on offer, and our teams look forward to welcoming even more customers onboard our services.”
