Durham Cathedral to Host Special Choral Evensong Celebrating 200 Years of the Railway
A special Choral Evensong to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the railway will be held at Durham Cathedral on Thursday, 2 October at 5.30pm.
The service, which is free to attend and open to all, will commemorate the historic journey made on the 27 September 1825 and celebrate the North East’s pivotal role as the birthplace of the modern railway.
Philip Plyming, Dean of Durham, who will be leading the service, said: “At Durham Cathedral we are delighted to be hosting this special service which celebrates the North East as a place of ingenuity and innovation. As we all know, one of the finest views of Durham Cathedral is from the train, and in this service we will be thanking God for all the railways have made possible over the last 200 years.’
David Horne, Managing Director of LNER, said: “The Stockton & Darlington Railway was the spark that ignited the railway age, transforming how people and goods moved, not just in the North East but across the globe. Two centuries on, it is fitting that we return to the region where it all began to celebrate this remarkable legacy and look forward to the future of rail.”
Niccy Hallifax, Festival Director of S&DR200, added: “The bicentenary is an extraordinary opportunity for communities across the North East to come together and reflect on our unique railway heritage. This Choral Evensong at Durham Cathedral will be another very poignant special moment of the S&DR200 Festival, uniting history, culture, and community in a truly special setting.”
