LNER AZUMA PASSING DURHAM WILDLIFE TRUST SITE RICKNALL CARRS

Last call for environmental causes to bid for LNER funding

Charities supporting environmental projects are being urged to apply for vital funding from LNER before it’s too late.

The LNER Customer and Community Investment Fund (CCIF) can award up to £10,000 to projects located along the East Coast Main Line route that support the LNER core value of being better for the planet.

Charities and good causes looking to establish or develop environmental projects have until 25 August to submit their applications, outlining how the funding would be used and the benefits that would be delivered.

Previous CCIF recipients include Durham Wildlife Trust, which used its funding to restore an area of wetland in County Durham. The Great North Fen is a project that is bringing grassland, fens, ponds, and wet woodland back to a site near the River Skerne. Funding from LNER helped the Trust reseed grassland, restore hedgerows, and create a new pond environment to support invertebrates, birds, and mammals. LNER shared a short film showcasing the positive impact the project is having on the landscape.

Jim Cokill, Director of Durham Wildlife Trust, said: “The work funded by LNER is the first step in delivering the vision for the Great North Fen—an area of wildlife-rich wetlands, woodlands, and farmland that could extend over 850 hectares. Partners like LNER are helping nature recover and are creating better environments for both wildlife and people.”

Rachael Wilson, Community Investment Manager at LNER, said: “We welcome applications from charities and groups that want to improve both the environment and the local community. I’d encourage any group based within 15 miles of the East Coast Main Line—if you have an idea for a project that would positively impact both wildlife and people—to apply for funding from the Customer and Community Investment Fund. We’re looking forward to learning more and seeing how we can support you.”
