LNER Transformational Timetable Drives Growth For The UK
The biggest timetable change on the East Coast Main Line in more than a decade will bring significant economic benefits, generating millions of pounds for local economies.
The new timetable, which launches on 14 December 2025, will see the introduction of an additional 10,000 LNER services per year and 60,000 extra seats available each week, unlocking further opportunities for UK communities and businesses.
Independent research shows that LNER contributes £3.11 billion annually to the UK economy, delivering £3.70 in economic, social and environmental benefits for every £1 spent. The new timetable is expected to deliver an additional £105 million of benefits annually.
Beyond offering more seats and greater choice, the new timetable will also bring wider benefits to local economies, including increased recruitment of frontline rail colleagues to support the expanded services. Local businesses within the LNER supply chain will also benefit from job creation, driven by higher demand.
In preparation for more customers choosing to travel by rail, LNER has made improvements to several stations along the East Coast Main Line. The Travel Centre at Edinburgh Waverley Station has moved to a brighter, more inviting space, with a new Passenger Assist Lounge and a vibrant Family Lounge recently opened. This is the third Family Lounge introduced by LNER, following the success of similar lounges at London King’s Cross and York stations. Customer Information Points have been upgraded at Newark Northgate Station, and heating systems have been improved at Grantham Station.
James Downey, Finance Director at LNER, said: “These are exciting times for LNER and the rail industry. Every day, our services strengthen the UK – connecting people, driving economic growth, and creating new opportunities. With more services and greater choice, we’ll continue to deliver benefits for our local businesses and communities across our route.”
