Sam Hueghan joins Routes from LNER
Outlander’s Sam Heughan Takes Jenni Falconer on a Journey Through Scotland, Everest, and the World of Cocktails.
Outlander star Sam Heughan joins broadcaster Jenni Falconer on Routes from LNER to explore his love of travel, fitness, and the world of spirits in a wide-ranging conversation that takes listeners from the Scottish Borders to Everest Base Camp.
The actor and entrepreneur reveals why Berwick-upon-Tweed and Scotland's southern coast deserve more attention from tourists, encouraging travellers to explore beyond the popular Highlands. Heughan shares how the area around Berwick offers stunning coastal runs, and further north, volcanic landmarks like Berwick Law, and served as a filming location for Outlander.
In a remarkable travel revelation, Heughan recounts his recent expedition to Everest Base Camp, his way of celebrating the end of Outlander's 11-year run. The journey took him on a never-before-attempted route through the Amphu Lapcha Pass at 20,000 feet, involving two weeks of hiking and rappelling into the Khumbu Valley in temperatures reaching minus nine degrees.
The conversation also explores Heughan's theatre return, playing Macbeth at the RSC in Stratford-upon-Avon, and his passion for whisky and cocktails. The actor discusses his newly released book, The Cocktail Diaries, and his Galloway distillery in his hometown of Newton Stewart, where he's creating Scottish gin and vodka using local botanicals.
From motorbike adventures through Mexico to surfing in Scotland and running marathons worldwide, Heughan proves that his appetite for adventure extends far beyond the screen. The episode also touches on the final season of Outlander that is out in March 2026 and the tourism impact of the show.
